A Turkish mosaic lamp is a decorative lamp featuring small pieces of colored glass, known as tiles, arranged into a pattern with beads on a glass globe. When lit, the colored glass creates a distinctive glow and highlights the mosaic design.
Guests can create their own version of this style during a fully guided, approximately 2.5-hour workshop. Sessions are held at Homewood Suites by Hilton Atlanta/Perimeter Center in Atlanta's Perimeter Center area, and no prior art or crafting experience is required.
What Makes a Lamp βMosaicβ
The term "mosaic" refers to arranging individual pieces β here, colorful glass tiles and beads β on a surface to form a larger design. In the workshop, guests place the pieces individually on the glass surface to create their chosen pattern or arrangement.
What a Turkish Mosaic Lamp Is Made Of
Glass tiles and beads. Colorful glass tiles and beads are the primary materials guests work with during the workshop.
A glass globe. For the four lamp styles, guests place the tiles and beads onto a glass globe. The candle holder is a separate project option made on a glass candle holder.
Mosaic glue and grout. Mosaic glue holds the tiles and beads in place during the session, and a grout packet is provided so guests can complete the final grouting step at home the following day.
A lamp base, for lamp styles. The metal lamp base β including the socket and cord β is not part of the hands-on mosaic process. It is provided separately at the end of the session for guests who choose a lamp style.
How Guests Create Their Own Version at the Workshop
Phase 1 β Tile Placement
Each guest begins working on their selected lamp style or candle holder by arranging colorful glass tiles onto the glass surface. Pattern guides are provided at each seat for guests who would like inspiration or a starting point, or they can create their own arrangement.
One serving of fresh baklava and one cup of traditional Turkish coffee are served as the group settles in. Every workshop includes a live music performance while guests continue working on their mosaic projects.
Phase 2 β Bead Placement
Once the tile design is in place, the experienced instructor demonstrates how to place colorful beads between the tiles to add depth and texture to the design. Each project develops its own look based on the colors, patterns, and bead combinations selected by each guest.
Wrap-Up β Grout Instructions
Because the mosaic glue needs approximately 10 to 12 hours to dry fully, the final grouting step is completed at home rather than during the workshop. Before the session ends, the experienced instructor demonstrates the grouting process, answers questions, and provides each guest with a grout packet and printed take-home instructions.
The Five Project Options
Guests choose from five mosaic project options when booking: the mini table lamp, table lamp, swan lamp, and moon lamp β four lamp styles β plus a candle holder option, which is a standalone accent piece with no lamp base.
